CULPOL Commentary no. 2 on contradictions of the Internet and the problem of articulating the public interest published

The article Contradictions of the Internet and the problem of articulating the public interest written by Paško Bilić, Research Associate at IRMO’s Department for Culture and Communication is the second CULPOL Commentary published within the framework of activities of the CULPOL project. In this commentary, the author focuses on three main contradictions that limit the frames of action and democratic envisioning of the digital communication space: (1) contradictions between free Internet services and their economic and political power over global information flows; (2) manipulation of public information and stifling of market competition under the myth of technological neutrality; (3) quantification of publicly available information and public information quality drop within the national context. The commentary opens up the theme of cultural and media policies in digital age that will be in focus during 2018.
